That's Not Me Written by Dr. Jen Clark
Do you ever hear negative thoughts about yourself in your head?
Like "I'm just a loser," "I'm a failure," "I'll never get it right," "I always say the wrong thing," and so on? Did you know that one simple principle can bring you a lot of relief?
I'll let you in on the secret. Don't accept everything you hear in your head!
Have you ever heard the old expression "you can't stop a bird from flying over your head but you don't have to let it make a nest in your hair"? God doesn't create any losers or failures. You can fail at something, but that doesn't make you a failure. No one was created with an identity of "failure".
Make a distinction. Start from the place of who you really are in Christ.
And who might that be? The New Creation you is the real you. That's who you really are, your true identity. Anything else is an imposter. When my son was little we went to visit relatives in Atlanta. He went out to play with his two cousins, but when he came back in he was hardly recognizable! He and his cousins had spent the afternoon rolling down the red clay slope behind the house, and he was covered in Georgia clay, and leaves and twigs were sticking out all over him. He looked like a red clay monster. However, we could see that John was somewhere underneath all the dirt. The dirt didn't fool us! His true identity was certainly hidden, but we stripped his dirty clothes off and put him in the bathtub. After a thorough scrubbing and a hair washing, there was our angelic looking son again. He now looked like the real John again.
When you hear those thoughts, that is not the New Creation you. The New Creation you is the real you, the person God created you to be. Like John, you may still have some cleaning up to do in some areas, but the dirt isn't the you. And those thoughts aren't the real you.
Make a distinction: You are a New Creation
Start from the place of your victory in Christ. You are a New Creation, fused together with Christ. This is who you really are. Make a distinction between the New Creation you and the thoughts and impressions that the enemy would like to impose on you. Say, "That’s not the real me". The real ‘you' is a New Creation who loves God and loves His Word. Ask yourself, "Is that something God would say about me?" If God wouldn't say that bad thing about you, then don't accept it because it is not true.
"if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Cor 5:17)
The New Creation is the real you. The New Creation loves God and His Word. The New Creation is more than a conqueror through Christ.
Say "that's not me" when you hear the thought and you have won the battle! |
